How the forecast works
In each city, the Japan Meteorological Agency watches a designated sample tree. When five or six flowers open, it announces the first bloom (kaika). Full bloom (mankai) is declared when about 80% of the buds are open, usually about a week later.
Forecasters predict the first bloom from how cold the winter was (the buds need a chill to wake up) and how warm February and March are. The first forecasts come out around December, and they become reliable a few weeks before the bloom. Recent years have often been early: in 2026, Nagoya bloomed on March 17 and Tokyo on March 19, about a week ahead of normal.
Our status on the map uses the forecast when there is one, and the normal date otherwise. Full bloom here means the days when the trees are usually at their best, not the official declaration.
Questions
When is cherry blossom season in Japan in 2027?
For Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka, the normal first-bloom dates are March 24 to 27, with full bloom about a week later. The safest window for a trip is the last week of March and the first week of April. Southern Kyushu blooms a little earlier, Tohoku in mid-April and Hokkaido in late April to early May.
When will the 2027 cherry blossom forecast be released?
Japan’s private weather companies usually publish their first forecasts in December or January and update them weekly from February. We update this page as soon as they’re out.
How long do cherry blossoms last?
About a week from first bloom to full bloom, and about another week until most petals have fallen. Rain and wind can shorten it, and cool weather can stretch it.
Where do the cherry blossoms bloom first?
Okinawa’s deep pink kanhizakura bloom in January and February. On the main islands, the Somei Yoshino usually open first in Kyushu, Shikoku and along the Pacific coast in late March, and last in Hokkaido in early May.
What if I arrive after the blossoms have fallen?
Head north or into the mountains, where the season comes later, or look for late-blooming double-flowered cherries (yaezakura), which open one to two weeks after the Somei Yoshino.
